ZenPen Poultry is a small hatchery built around healthy birds, strong genetics, practical purpose, and a real respect for the work that goes into raising good stock. At the heart of it all is a special focus on Ayam Cemani, the breed that continues to humble, challenge, and completely steal the show around here.

While Ayam Cemani is our main focus, ZenPen Poultry also raises select chicken breeds and quail with an eye toward health, structure, usefulness, and quality. Our flock includes Ayam Cemani, Cream Legbars, Japanese Bantams, Old English Game Bantams, Coturnix quail, and Celadon quail.

This hatchery was built with intention. Not because poultry is always peaceful, because let’s be honest, sometimes it absolutely is not, but because there is something grounding about doing this work well. ZenPen came from that balance. A little mindfulness, a little madness, and a whole lot of birds with opinions.

What We’re About

At ZenPen Poultry, we care about more than pretty birds and catchy labels. We believe good stock should be healthy, functional, and worth building from. That means paying attention to the details that matter: structure, vigor, temperament, purpose, and the long game behind every breeding decision.

Some birds are being bred with exhibition in mind and a strong respect for the Standard of Perfection. Some are meant to help people build solid backyard flocks with a better place to start. Some are valued for practical use, productivity, and purpose. Around here, all of that matters.

Pretty is nice. Healthy, sound, and thoughtfully raised is better.

Our Focus

Ayam Cemani is the center of our program and the breed we are most passionate about developing. We care deeply about breeding birds that move closer to the Standard of Perfection while still keeping health, soundness, and overall quality front and center.

We also raise other breeds and quail, each bringing something different to the farm. Some are here because they are useful. Some because they are fascinating. Some because they are just plain fun to work with. Most are a little bit of all three.

Whether you are here looking for hatching eggs, chicks, live birds, solid stock for your backyard flock, exhibition-minded breeding prospects, or simply to follow along, the goal stays the same: raise birds with intention and keep building something honest.

Why ZenPen

There is a lot of noise in the poultry world. A lot of hype. A lot of opinions. A lot of people pretend every bird is perfect and every season goes exactly to plan.

That is not really our style.

ZenPen exists to raise quality birds, keep learning, and share practical knowledge in a way that is useful, real, and approachable. We believe people deserve better information, realistic expectations, and a look behind the curtain that still respects the work.

This life can be beautiful, hilarious, frustrating, rewarding, and a little unhinged, sometimes all before breakfast. Somewhere in the middle of that, ZenPen found its voice.
